Over recent years bank erosion at Hazelwood has resulted in the river running ever closer to the railway, this has resulted in members having to trespass on the railway to walk upstream as well as having a detrimental effect on the stability of the trackbed itself.
A couple of years ago the Ecclesbourne Railway Co took matters into their own hands and deposited a number of concrete sleepers into the river at strategic erosion sites, while this diverted some of the river flow from the sensitive areas it was hardly a long term solution – particularly when the river was in spate.
In order to provide a safe access for our members and safeguard against future erosion we consulted a Contractor who inspected the sites and recommended galvanised sheet piling.
The proposal was acceptable and work has started and should continue until early September.
